OpenAI buys NextSlide: the platform risk lesson

A two-person-idea company that turned notes into slide decks has been absorbed into ChatGPT. This happens roughly monthly now, and there is a way to tell in advance whether it will happen to you.

The openai nextslide acquisition, announced publicly on 8 August 2026, follows a pattern worth understanding if you sell anything built on someone else's model. NextSlide turned notes and research into finished presentations. Founded in mid-2025 by Ahmed Beshry, the whole team has joined OpenAI to work on ChatGPT features. Terms were not disclosed.

The reflex reading is that a wrapper got eaten. The more useful one is that the founders got paid to build the same thing with more distribution, which is the good version of this outcome. The bad version is a shutdown notice.

What the openai nextslide acquisition tells you about the boundary

Every platform has a line. Inside it is what the platform means to own; outside is what it wants an ecosystem to supply. The line moves toward whatever generates obvious usage.

Presentations were always going to be inside. Not because slide decks are technically hard, but because they are a general knowledge-work output a chat product produces naturally once it handles files and images. The same is true of summarising documents and drafting emails. If your core loop is a general knowledge-work verb applied to a general file type, you are standing on the platform's floor plan. Outside the line is everything the platform will not acquire: a regulated workflow, a data set it cannot license, an integration with a system it does not care about.

Four questions that predict it

Run these honestly. Two or more yes answers and you should assume the platform arrives within a year.

  1. Can you describe your product in one sentence with no proper nouns other than the model provider? A general capability has no moat by definition.

  2. Would your feature make an obvious bullet point in the platform's next release notes? Platforms ship what demos well at their own events.

  3. Does your product hold any data the platform cannot get? Not data you happen to have, data it cannot obtain by shipping the feature itself.

  4. If the platform shipped your feature tomorrow at zero marginal price, what would your customers keep paying you for? If the honest answer is nothing, that is the answer.

This is not an argument against building on a platform. It is an argument for knowing which side of the line you picked. Plenty of durable businesses sit on the wrong side deliberately and plan to exit into an acquisition. That is a strategy. Drifting there is not.

What actually survives the platform

The products that keep their customers after a platform ships their feature tend to have one of four things:

Defence

What it looks like

How hard to copy

Workflow depth

Ten screens of specific process, not one prompt

Slow, unglamorous, real

Proprietary data

Records the platform cannot license

Very hard

Integration surface

Live connections into systems nobody at the platform uses

Hard and boring

Service relationship

A human who knows the customer's business

Cannot be shipped

None of those are features. They are forms of accumulated specificity, which is what a general model is bad at and what takes time to build. What is an AI wrapper app sets out where the term is fair and where it is lazy.

If you are on the wrong side of the line

You have three moves, and they are not mutually exclusive.

Go narrower. A presentation tool for anyone is a platform feature. A tool that produces investment committee papers in one bank's house format, pulling live figures from that bank's systems, is not. Narrowness feels like giving up market and is usually the only thing that buys durability.

Go deeper into service. Software that comes with someone who configures it is much harder to displace than software that comes with a login. Independent builders underrate this route: it scales worst and defends best. Productized AI services covers running it without becoming an agency by accident.

Or build to be bought. Optimise for a clean team, a clean codebase and demonstrable usage, and treat acquisition as the plan rather than the failure. That is roughly what happened here.

The pricing effect people miss

When a platform absorbs a category, the reference price becomes included rather than zero, and anyone still selling standalone is selling against free. That shows up as a slow bleed in conversion, not a collapse, which makes it easy to misdiagnose as a marketing problem. Reprice before the bleed rather than after: how to write a pricing page for an AI product covers framing value when the underlying capability is commoditised.

FAQ

How much did OpenAI pay for NextSlide?

Financial terms were not disclosed. OpenAI typically does not disclose terms on smaller acquisitions.

Does this mean AI wrapper apps are dead?

No. It means general-purpose ones sitting on a platform's roadmap are fragile. Narrow, data-heavy or service-backed products are not in the same position.

Should I stop building on OpenAI?

Platform risk is not a reason to avoid platforms, it is a reason to price it. Keep your prompts and orchestration portable so switching providers is a week of work rather than a rewrite.

How do I tell if my idea is too general before I build it?

Ask what a customer would keep paying for if the model provider shipped your feature for free. If you cannot answer, validate harder first: how to validate an AI product idea sets out the checks worth doing before you write code.

How did this land?
