From 9 October, free Gemini users get Flash-Lite only and AI Plus loses Pro. Here is the tier table and what it changes if you prototype with Gemini.

From 9 October, free users of the Gemini app are limited to the Flash-Lite model, losing access to Flash and Pro. Google AI Plus subscribers keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro, and AI Pro at $19.99 a month gains Deep Think. If you use the free app to draft prompts for something you are building, your results will now come from the smallest model in the family.

The new tiers

9to5Google reported the changes on 3 October, citing a Google support document. Android Headlines and AI Weekly carry the same tier breakdown.

Per the coverage, Deep Think was previously limited to the two Ultra tiers. Affected users are due to get an email explaining when the change reaches them.

Effort levels use up your limit

The Gemini app is also adding low, medium and high effort settings for each model. The support document, as quoted by 9to5Google, says higher levels give more thorough answers but use more of your limit. That makes the choice of effort a budget decision, much like reasoning effort in the API world.

What is not known yet

Two things are unclear from the coverage I found.

  • 9to5Google notes Google has not said whether the new Gemini 4 Argon counts as a Pro-tier model or sits above the current structure. Our own Gemini 4 Argon write-up covers what Google has actually shipped.

  • The reports describe the Gemini app. None of them says anything about the developer API, so check Google's API documentation for the model you call, including its rates.

What it changes for builders

If you build with Gemini, the free app was a handy place to test whether a prompt works. From 9 October, a prompt that works on Flash-Lite tells you little about how Pro will behave, and the reverse is also true. Test on the model your product will call, and compare cheap and expensive models on your own tasks, as described in frontier model vs cheap model.

If you are deciding whether the $4.99 or $19.99 tier is worth paying for, the question is the same as for any subscription: does the model you lose change your results? Free vs paid AI tools walks through that decision, and how to test a new AI model before switching gives a method you can reuse here.
