Gemini App Tasks: What It Can Actually Do
A toggle in the Gemini app switches from chat to tasks, and the assistant keeps working when you close the laptop. For a small business, the question is which jobs are safe to hand over.
Gemini app tasks are jobs you hand to the assistant that keep running after you stop watching. Google added a toggle in the main chat window on 13 October 2026 that switches from chat to tasks, and says Gemini can then work on a task when you are not at your computer. It connects to more than 40 apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify, for things like ordering groceries or booking a table. Access needs a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.
For anyone running a business on their own, that is interesting and slightly alarming in the same breath. The useful question is not what it can touch. It is which jobs you would be happy to find already done.
What a task is, as opposed to a chat
A chat ends when you close it. A task continues, reports progress along the way, and produces something when you come back. Google says Argon shares its progress more often during longer tasks, which is a small change with a real effect: a job you cannot see is a job you cannot interrupt.
The 40-app figure matters less than the kind of connection. An app that reads your calendar and an app that spends your money are the same integration to a developer and completely different risks to you.
Sort the jobs by what happens if it is wrong
Reversibility is the only sorting rule that holds up. Here is the order worth working through.
Tier | Job type | If it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
Hand over first | Drafting, summarising, research, comparing suppliers, pulling a report together | You delete a draft |
Hand over with review | Scheduling, replying to routine enquiries, preparing an order, updating a listing | You send an apology |
Keep yourself | Spending money, cancelling bookings, messaging customers unprompted, anything touching payroll | You lose money or a customer |
Tier one is where the hours are, and it is the tier most people skip because it feels less impressive than the agent that books the table. A weekly competitor-price pull or a tidy summary of the week's enquiries saves more time than an automated dinner reservation and cannot embarrass you.
Tier three is not about trust in the model. It is that an action nobody watched and nobody approved is hard to undo and harder to explain. The practical version of this is already written up in what to do when an agent takes an action you did not approve, and the short answer is that the recovery is always slower than the approval would have been.
What Google has not specified
The Gemini app post is thin in four places, and the gaps affect whether this is usable for you.
No usage limits. Neither tier's task allowance is stated. If you plan to run something daily, that is the first thing to test.
No country or language list. The launch post calls the rollout global, the app post gives no regional detail.
No free tier. Pro or Ultra only, as far as either post says.
No per-app permission detail. Connecting 40 apps is announced, what scope each connection takes is not described in the post.
None of that is a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to test with one low-stakes job before you build a routine around it.
Who this actually suits
If your week contains repeated research and writing, the value is immediate and the risk is close to zero. A florist checking three wholesalers' prices, a consultant turning six calls into a client summary, a shop owner drafting next month's listings: all tier one, all genuine time back.
If your week is mostly serving customers in person, the connected-app list is less relevant than it looks, and an assistant that answers the phone is a different product with different failure modes. We compared those tradeoffs in what an AI receptionist does and does not handle.
Either way, pick one job, run it for two weeks, and measure the time it actually returns. The way to measure AI return for a small business has not changed because the assistant got a new toggle.
The Gemini app is also one of the two places where Google's new Universal Cart works, alongside AI Mode in Search.
Questions people ask
Can Gemini spend money without asking me?
Google's post describes tasks such as ordering groceries and booking tables through connected apps, and does not publish the approval behaviour for each app. Until you have verified it yourself on a small order, assume you need to check rather than assume a confirmation step exists.
Do I need the new model for tasks?
Tasks arrived in the Gemini app in the same announcement as Argon, and the post describes Argon as what Pro and Ultra subscribers get. The capability and the model shipped together, so there is no older-model version of this to choose.
Is this different from scheduling a recurring prompt?
Yes. A scheduled prompt runs the same instruction on a timer. A task is a goal the assistant works towards across several steps, which is why progress reporting is part of the feature.
What is the smallest sensible first task?
Something you already do weekly by hand, where the output is a document rather than an action. A supplier price comparison or a summary of the week's enquiries. If it produces a file you read, the worst case is a wasted five minutes. Start there and work up, the broader map is in AI for small business.
