How to Delete Your AI Chat History (And What Stays)
How to delete your AI chat history, and what deletion really does. Two providers' retention windows side by side, plus the copies people miss.
How to delete your AI chat history is a two-part question. The first part is easy: the delete button removes a chat from your view immediately. The second part is what happens to the copy on the provider's servers, and there the answer is a window of time, with exceptions.
This post uses the providers' own help pages as they read when I checked, so check them again before you rely on a specific number. Policies change.
How to delete your AI chat history in ChatGPT
OpenAI's help article on deleting and archiving chats in ChatGPT says, as summarised in current results:
A deleted chat disappears from your account right away.
Permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems is scheduled within 30 days, unless the chat has already been de-identified and disconnected from your account, or OpenAI must keep it longer for security or legal reasons.
You cannot restore a deleted chat, either yourself or through support.
Archiving only hides a chat from the sidebar. It does not change how long the chat is kept.
Temporary Chats do not appear in your history, but the current wording says a copy may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes. An older version of the article described automatic deletion within 30 days, so wording has shifted. Treat the current page as the reference.
Files you saved to Library are separate. Deleting the chat does not delete them, you remove the file from Library.
I could not load the help page directly from my environment, so the details above come from search-result summaries of the article. Read the live page for exact wording.
What deleting does: Claude
Anthropic's Privacy Center article on deleting data sent via Claude covers the consumer plans (Free, Pro and Max). It describes two stages: deleted conversations are removed from your history immediately, and automatically deleted from Anthropic's back-end within 30 days. Exceptions apply where the data is needed to enforce usage policies, address violations or meet legal obligations.
A separate Anthropic article says that if you allow your chats to be used to improve its models, data can be kept in de-identified form for up to 5 years in training pipelines. Deleting a chat does not reverse training use that has already happened.
Business and API accounts are covered by different pages. Anthropic's article on how long organisation data is stored describes deletion from back-end storage within 30 days for those products, with longer periods for policy violations and for agreed arrangements such as zero data retention.
Side by side
Question | ChatGPT (consumer) | Claude (consumer) |
|---|---|---|
Gone from your view | Immediately | Immediately |
Gone from provider systems | Scheduled within 30 days, with exceptions | Purged from back-end within 30 days, with exceptions |
Exceptions named | Security, legal, de-identified data | Policy enforcement, violations, legal |
Can you undo it | No | Not stated, assume no |
Training setting affects it | Check your data controls | Up to 5 years de-identified if you opted in |
If the account belongs to your employer
Work accounts follow different rules from personal ones. Anthropic's organisation article, for example, describes deletion from back-end storage within 30 days for its business products, with inputs and outputs kept for up to 2 years where a usage policy violation is flagged. Administrators may also control retention, export and logging for the whole workspace, so a user deleting a chat may not be the end of the record. Ask your administrator what is kept before you assume a deleted work chat is gone, and do not move sensitive work into a personal account to avoid the question.
The copies that survive deleting a chat
Deleting the chat is the smallest part of cleaning up. Work through this list:
Uploaded files. Delete them from wherever the tool stores them, not just the conversation.
Saved preferences or memory. If the product remembers facts about you, review and clear those separately.
Model improvement setting. Turn it off before you chat about anything sensitive, since deleting later does not reverse past training use.
Exports and screenshots. Any copy you saved is outside the provider's deletion.
Connected apps. Tools you linked to your email, calendar or drive keep their own access until you revoke it.
Shared links. If you shared a chat, check that the link stops working after deletion.
Browser and device. Local caches and synced browser history live on your devices.
Before you chat: the better habit
Deleting is a clean-up. Prevention is cheaper. Do not paste customer records, passwords, API keys or contract text into a consumer chat. How to prompt AI without leaking sensitive data covers what to remove first, and can AI leak your prompts to other users explains the actual risk path. If you handle other people's data, deleting customer data from an AI tool is the process that applies to them, and what zero data retention means describes the stronger arrangement some business plans offer. For the overall picture, see AI risks.
If a chat contained something you cannot afford to leak
Deleting does not undo a leak. Change any credential that appeared in the chat, and treat the data as exposed. Responding to an AI data leak walks through the steps in order.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting a ChatGPT chat delete it permanently?
It disappears from your account immediately, and OpenAI schedules permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, with exceptions for security and legal needs. You cannot restore it.
How long does Claude keep deleted conversations?
For consumer plans, Anthropic says deleted conversations are removed from your history at once and purged from its back-end within 30 days, subject to policy and legal exceptions.
Is archiving the same as deleting an AI chat?
No. Archiving hides the chat from your sidebar but does not change retention. Only deleting starts the removal process.
Can I stop AI companies training on my chats?
Both providers have settings that control whether your chats are used to improve models. Turn the setting off before you chat, because deleting later does not undo training that already used the data.
