OpenAI retired the standalone DALL-E GPT from ChatGPT on August 30, 2026. The change was announced in OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes on July 31, with users told to download any images they wanted to keep before the cutoff. The official DALL-E GPT, one of the original entries in the GPT store, is gone. Image generation is not. ChatGPT Images, built on gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini, is now the only path to generating pictures inside ChatGPT's main interface. Custom GPTs with image generation enabled keep working as before. If you built a workflow around the DALL-E GPT specifically, it needs attention now.

What actually changed

The DALL-E GPT was a pinned, OpenAI-built GPT in the GPT store that handled requests through the old DALL-E 3 pipeline. It was a distinct product from the image generation ChatGPT does by default in a normal chat, which already moved to gpt-image-1 months ago. What ended on August 30 was the separate, brand-named GPT entry point. OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes frame it as consolidation: one image system instead of two, with the legacy GPT wrapper removed.

What breaks and what doesn't

For builders, the distinction is between the interface and the assets.

  • Breaks: any saved link, shortcut, or workflow step that opens the DALL-E GPT directly. Any documentation or onboarding material telling users to "go to the DALL-E GPT" is now pointing at a dead end.

  • Breaks: prompt habits tuned specifically for DALL-E 3's rendering quirks. gpt-image-1 interprets prompts differently, so copy-pasted DALL-E prompts will not always produce the same look.

  • Does not break: custom GPTs you built that call image generation as a capability. OpenAI has explicitly said these are unaffected.

  • Does not break: images already generated and saved outside ChatGPT (downloaded to disk, stored in your own database, embedded in a product).

  • At risk: images that only ever lived inside old ChatGPT conversations and were never downloaded. Recovery depends on whether you can still open the original conversation thread and save from it directly.

How to save old DALL-E images now

If you or your team have ChatGPT conversations containing DALL-E-generated images you still need, treat this as immediate cleanup. As Tom's Guide reported, the deadline caught many users off guard since the DALL-E GPT had been running quietly in the background for years:

  1. Open each conversation containing images you rely on.

  2. Download each image individually. There is no official bulk-export for chat-embedded images.

  3. Rename and file them by project as you go, before the conversation scrolls out of easy reach.

  4. Replace live ChatGPT links in documentation, marketing pages, or client deliverables with the downloaded files.

  5. Check internal tools or GPTs that reference DALL-E by name and update them to ChatGPT Images.

ChatGPT Images vs DALL-E in practice

Builders who prompted DALL-E for years will notice differences in gpt-image-1's behavior. It follows long, detailed prompts more literally, handles text rendering inside images far better than DALL-E ever did, and stays more consistent when editing an existing image rather than regenerating from scratch. DALL-E prompts written in short, evocative phrases sometimes underperform on gpt-image-1, which rewards explicit, structured instructions. If your prompt library still reads like it was written for DALL-E 3, it is worth revisiting. Our guide on writing effective AI image generation prompts covers the structure that works best on current-generation models.

Part of a pattern

This is not an isolated cleanup. OpenAI already retired o3 from ChatGPT earlier in 2026, and GPT-4.5 before that. The DALL-E GPT removal follows the o3 retirement from ChatGPT by only a few days. If you build products on OpenAI's consumer surface, expect this cadence to continue. None of these retirements affect the API, according to OpenAI, but ChatGPT's consumer-facing tools are clearly being pruned on a regular schedule now, and the DALL-E GPT was simply next in line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DALL-E completely gone from ChatGPT?

The standalone DALL-E GPT is gone as of August 30, 2026. Image generation itself is not gone. It now runs through ChatGPT Images, powered by gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini, inside the normal chat interface rather than a separate GPT.

Can I still download images I made with the old DALL-E GPT?

If the conversation is still accessible in your ChatGPT history, open it and download the images individually. There is no dedicated bulk-export tool for DALL-E-era images, so do this manually and promptly if you have not already.

Do custom GPTs with image generation still work?

Yes. OpenAI has confirmed that custom GPTs built with image generation enabled are not affected by the DALL-E GPT retirement. Only the official, OpenAI-built DALL-E GPT was removed.

What model replaces DALL-E in ChatGPT now?

ChatGPT Images, which runs on gpt-image-1 and its smaller variant gpt-image-1-mini. It handles both new image generation and edits to existing images within the same chat interface.
