Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork
Anthropic collapsed Claude chat, Cowork, Artifacts and Claude Design into a single interface and added presentations and documents. Rolling out to Pro and Max first.
Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork
Anthropic has collapsed Claude's separate surfaces into one window. Chat, Cowork, Artifacts and Claude Design now live in a single interface that routes a request to the right one without you picking a tab first. The change was reported on 16 September 2026, and it ships with two new output types: presentations and documents.
The practical version: you stop choosing which Claude you are talking to.
What is actually new
Two features arrived alongside the merge.
Presentations. You can ask Claude to build, edit and present slides, and download the result as PDF or PowerPoint.
Docs. A document surface where you work with Claude on a draft in sections, ask questions against it, and leave comments. Documents and slides share by link and can be edited on mobile.
Cowork itself also picked up a stronger memory layer, so context carries between conversations rather than dying with the tab.
Who gets it and when
Pro and Max subscribers first, across web, desktop and mobile, described as rolling out "over the coming weeks." Free and team tiers are planned for later, with no date attached. If you are on a team plan and reading this because someone sent you a slide deck Claude made, that is why you cannot do it yet.
Why the merge is the story, not the slides
Slide generation is not new and is not why this matters.
The interesting bit is the admission baked into it. Anthropic shipped Cowork, Artifacts and Claude Design as separate things, and users did not reliably know which one to open for a given job. Consolidating them into automatic routing is a concession that the surface area had outgrown the product, which is a problem every AI company with more than two features now has.
For anyone building on top of these models, that is a useful signal about where the interface layer is heading. The bet is that the model decides what kind of output the request wants, rather than the user declaring it up front. That works when routing is right and is quietly annoying when it is wrong, because there is no longer an obvious place to go and correct it.
The memory part deserves more attention than the slides
The upgraded memory layer in Cowork is the change most likely to alter how the thing behaves day to day. Persistent context across sessions is what separates a tool you re-explain your project to every morning from one that already knows it.
It is also the change with the most failure modes. Stale facts that were true three weeks ago, retrieval that surfaces the wrong project, and context you would rather it forgot are the standard problems here, and they are worth understanding before you lean on it. Our explainer on what an AI agent's long-term memory actually is under the hood covers the three patterns involved and where each one breaks.
If you are paying attention to cost as well as behaviour, persistent context and context caching interact in ways that are not always obvious on the bill.
Should you care this week
If you are on Pro or Max and you already used Cowork, yes, the tab-switching goes away and you get two new output formats. If you are on a free or team plan, nothing changes yet.
If you are evaluating whether this shifts anything strategically, the answer is probably no on its own. It is a consolidation release, and consolidation releases are how a product admits it got sprawling. Worth watching is whether the automatic routing holds up when the request is ambiguous, because that is where merged interfaces usually fail. Most launches do not require you to do anything, and this is a comfortable example.

FAQ
What is Cowork in Claude?
Cowork is Anthropic's collaborative workspace inside Claude, where you work alongside the model on a piece of work rather than trading single messages. It now sits in the same window as chat rather than a separate tab.
Can Claude make PowerPoint files now?
Yes. The new presentations feature lets you ask Claude to create and edit slides, then download them as PDF or PowerPoint.
Do free Claude users get the merged interface?
Not at launch. The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop and mobile, with free and team tiers planned afterwards and no announced date.
Is this a new model?
No. This is an interface and feature change, not a model release. Nothing about model capability, pricing or API behaviour was announced with it.
